NEWS

Report checks pulse of Australia's mental health
Mental Health Australia has released a new report showing that rising household costs are directly damaging our mental health. The 2023 Report to the Nation, an independent annual benchmark survey conducted by Ipsos, found that cost of living was having a major impact on 58% of Australians while housing costs was affecting 41%. Significantly, 21% said cost was a barrier to receiving mental health support and 24% felt they should be able to solve their situation on their own.

National Safe Work Month 2023
October is National Safe Work Month - a time to commit to building a safe and healthy workplace free from both physical and psychological harm. The campaign is designed to encourage individuals and organisations to prioritise workplace safety and reduce the number of work-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

According to Safe Work Australia, work-related psychological injuries have longer recovery times, higher costs, and require more time away from work than physical injuries.
Work Safe Queensland will hold a number of events during the month, including a Work Well Conference at the Brisbane Convention and Entertainment Centre on October 17, and an online speaker series.

Global spotlight on mental health
World Mental Health Day 2023 is an opportunity for people and communities to unite behind the theme: Mental health is a universal human right. Organised by the World Federation for Mental Health, the October 10 event was created to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health.

INDUSTRY STATISTICS

Overwhelmed by your workload?
Are your to-do lists stretching on and on? Maybe you’ve noticed that anxiety about how much is on your list is preventing you from concentrating on your current task? You might feel anxious that you’re not working during times that are incompatible with working - like when you’re buckling your child into their car seat or you’re stuck in traffic. In this Harvard Business Review article, clinical psychologist and author Alice Boyes offers some helpful suggestions on how to address being stressed by your workload.

REAL CARE TOOLS

Ride the urge wave
Urges to behave in unhelpful ways - such as gambling, avoiding issues or drinking to cope - often happen when we experience strong emotions or are making changes to our behaviour (such as cutting down a habit). Rapid Relief Tools on the free Real Care App offer short exercises to help you stay in control.

WISE PERSPECTIVES

Does working hard make you a good person?
Around the world, people who work hard are often seen as morally good - even if they produce little to no results. In this short TED talk, social psychologist Azim Shariff analyses the roots of this belief and suggests a shift towards a more meaningful way to think about effort, rather than admiring work for work's sake.
