DECEMBER 2023

WELCOME to our last 2023 edition of Mind Over Market. It has been a jam-packed year for us at Rise, but now is a great time to look forward and think about some New Year’s resolutions for 2024.

This month we study some important issues that contribute to mental wellness: diversity, inclusion and social connection.  What changes can you make in your team and your local community in the new year to help the people close to you make a fresh start?

To support your planning in January, we also have a free mental health plan template for you to download, courtesy of the Queensland Mental Health Commission, plus tips on how you can set goals using the Real Care App.

Perhaps you are considering adopting a four-day work week in 2024? And yes, it can be done - take 10 minutes out of your day to check out our video from the Rise Thrive conference and learn from the experience of the Rentwest team.

And don’t forget, if you are looking for a gift for your leadership team, you still have a chance to grab early bird tickets to the Rise Leadership Advance conference on April 18 and 19 - we have just announced our first keynote speakers.

Thanks for Rising with us in 2023. We hope that you now may take time out to rest, recharge and spend quality time with loved ones. See you in 2024!

NEWS
Inclusive workplaces boost staff wellbeing

Three out of four Australian workers support or strongly support their organisation taking action to create a workplace that is diverse and inclusive, according to the Diversity Council Australia.

The Council’s Inclusion@Work Index 2023-2024 notes that inclusion is much more than a “feel good” exercise – it creates a better work environment that boosts employee wellbeing, fuels performance and minimises risk.

Workplace inclusion significantly increases employee wellbeing, with the study finding that workers are:
  • 10 times more likely to be very satisfied than workers in non-inclusive teams.
  • 3 times less likely to leave their organisation.
  • 4 times more likely to feel work has a positive impact on their mental health.
  • 2.5 times more likely to have been given feedback they found useful.

WHO fosters social connection

The World Health Organisation has announced a new Commission on Social Connection to address loneliness as a pressing health threat.

Social isolation has a serious impact on physical and mental health with studies showing that it has been linked to anxiety and depression, and can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%.

Lack of social connection carries an equivalent, or even greater, risk of early death as other better-known risk factors such as smoking, excessive drinking, physical inactivity, obesity, and air pollution.

The Commission consists of 11 leading policy-makers, thought leaders and advocates. Running for three years, it will analyse the central role social connection plays in improving health for people of all ages and outline solutions to build social connections at scale.

The Commission will consider how connection enhances the well-being of our communities and societies and helps foster economic progress, social development, and innovation.

Cathy Baker from Belle Property gave a fantastic presentation at Rise Thrive on the role that we can play as real estate agents in fostering social connection within our communities.

STATISTICS

Survey finds workers at psychological crossroads

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has released findings from the 2023 Australian Workforce Survey, shedding light on the critical importance of psychological health in the workplace.

The survey of more than 2,000 participants across various industries underscores the need for effective leadership, employee well-being, and organisational culture in fostering successful and future-ready workplaces.

The project was conducted by the APS College for Organisational Psychology in partnership with the Future of Work Institute at Curtin University.

APS CEO Dr Zena Burgess said: “We are living in a time of monumental change in how workplaces are structured and function, and this important work helps shed a light on what this means for organisations and the economy. It’s clear that much more needs to be done to improve psychological safety in the workplace, regardless of where or how you work.”
Key findings revealed:
  • Only 52% of workers felt their employers took care to ensure their workplace experiences contributed to their wellbeing.
  • Just a quarter of respondents thought their workplaces could be described by adjectives like: “future-focused, open and rewarding”.
  • Only 11% of respondents thought their organisation was agile, while almost 10% listed their workplace as “pedantic”.
  • 60% described their work as emotionally demanding.
  • Employees who had the option to work from home reported higher mean levels of job satisfaction and psychological safety.

WISE PERSPECTIVES

Lessons from a four-day work week

If you agreed to let your team work four days a week, would the world end as we know it? How can we even consider making such a change if all we hear about is how stressed and busy everyone is? We bring you the lessons from Rentwest and their participation in the global four-day work week trial.

EVENTS

Leadership that delivers thriving performance

Each year the Rise Initiative gathers more than 100 of real estate’s top principals and leaders for an exclusive two days of learning, networking and discussions to explore the issues that challenge both our individual performance and the performance of our people.

Over the past two years, Rise Leadership has earned a reputation for boldly confronting issues that have previously been taboo with full and frank conversations about what good leadership really looks like. The impact is raw, and honest and will transform your leadership journey. Past events have received rave reviews.

Our focus is on identifying how resilient and highly effective leadership cultures that support high-performance teams are created and sustained long-term and how we can transform our industry with businesses to recognise the whole human, not just the commission cheque.

Join us - and 100 of your top-performing peers - in 2024 at Rise Leadership Advance on April 18 and 19 as we again challenge the status quo.

Early announced speakers include tennis champion Jelena Dokic, Hunter Johnson discussing the new masculinity culture, and Kristen Hansen bringing us a fascinating topic: the neuroscience of leadership. Plus many more to come.

Thanks to the generous support of Macquarie, this exclusive leadership conference will again take place at their global headquarters, 50 Martin Place, Sydney. It is also supported by Rise partners Domain, MRI and CoreLogic. Don’t miss your seat at the table. Grab your early bird ticket before the end of the year and save $500! Tickets will sell out.
